Point Zero Studio

Climate strategy & advisory · Building performance · Human experience

We engage at point zero.

Point Zero Studio is an all-expert advisory practice. We bring expert judgment and technical analysis to capital planning, design decisions, and climate mitigation and adaptation strategy. We work with architects, owners, and investors, upstream and downstream of design and construction.

Method

Analysis in service of a decision.

Technical work earns its place by changing what someone does. That order — decision first, analysis second — is what keeps the work useful rather than merely correct.

  1. One

    Frame the decision.

Before any analysis, establish what the number has to answer, who acts on it, and when. A study that arrives after the decision is a record, not advice.

  2. Two

    Analyse at the right depth.

The lightest analysis that resolves the question, and no lighter. Depth is spent where the decision actually turns on it, not distributed evenly for the appearance of rigour.

  3. Three

    State the basis.

Every output carries its assumptions, the vintage of its data, and the one choice that moves the answer most. A number without its basis is not advice.

Point Zero Studio is led by Shruti Kasarekar, an architect and building scientist who has spent nearly two decades on the technical side of the built environment — first as an energy analyst at Arup, then at Atelier Ten, where she led the US environmental design practice and the San Francisco office.

Her work sits where building physics meets consequence: whole-life carbon, energy and daylight, thermal comfort, and the decarbonisation of buildings that were never designed to be decarbonised. That work has included the SFMOMA expansion, Uber's headquarters, and Adobe's Founders Tower, and it has been argued in front of code officials when the by-the-book reading would have produced a worse building.

She started Point Zero Studio because the analysis was arriving too late to matter. The modelling that decides whether a building performs is usually commissioned after the decisions that determine the answer have already been made. What she offers is the judgment that comes before the model — which question is worth asking, which asset is worth the capital, and what a number actually means for the decision in front of you.

Check before publishing. Two things only you can settle: whether Atelier Ten reads in the past tense yet, and whether you are clear to name SFMOMA, Uber and Adobe as your work rather than the firm's. Everything here comes from your résumé or your public record — nothing is invented.
